The New York University men's tennis team was edged by Carnegie Mellon University 5-4 in the second round of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tennis Championship on Saturday, April 22, in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The Violets came into the three-day tournament as the #7 seed, while the Tartans were seeded #6.
The two teams battled to the end on Saturday, with the match not being decided until Carnegie's William Wang defeated NYU's
Zachary Freier in a three-set thriller (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) at #3 singles in the afternoon's final contest.
NYU trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but singles victories by
Alex Yang (#1),
Boren Zheng (#2) and
Joseph He (#4) knotted the match.
Freier was able to rebound after dropping the first set, but could not come all the way back as the Violets fell just short.
"The guys battled for over four hours and left it all on the court," explained Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We came out with good energy in doubles and only a point here or there was the difference in us having the lead. We showed a lot of grit in singles and it came down to third sets at 3 and 5. Unfortunately, Carnegie capitalized on some key points and that was the difference. I'm very proud of how hard our guys played."
The Violets will take on #8 seed University of Rochester in their final match of the Championship at 8:30am on Sunday.
