Natalie Bruns and
Caroline Peper scored 17 points each as New York University's
seventh-ranked women's basketball teamed raced past Case Western Reserve University, 82-44, on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, OH.
The Violets have now won six straight games for a 17-2 overall record and 7-2 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). All of NYU's UAA wins have come by 11-or-more points and the Violets have swept the season series with CWRU after
last weekend's 11-point home victory.
The Spartans scored the first basket of the game today but that was their only lead of the afternoon as NYU followed with seven consecutive points to take momentum. The Violets went on to lead 21-17 at the end of the first quarter before breaking things open in the second.
CWRU came within three, 25-22, early in the second before the Violets used a 12-3 run to take control, leading 37-25 after a Peper trey with 2:56 to go before the break. NYU went on to lead by 20, 46-26, after holding the hosts to 2-of-12 field-goal shooting in the second.
Bruns poured in nine points in the third quarter while
Brooklyn Shelton had seven of her own in the frame as NYU held a 71-38 lead entering the fourth. The Violets outscored Case Western Reserve 11-6 in the final frame to put this one away.
Bruns shot 8-of-16 from the field and added seven boards, three assists and two steals. Peper was super efficient, shooting 7-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 from deep to go with three assists and a rebound.
Belle Pellecchia contributed 15 points (6-of-9 FG), five boards and two steals. Shelton totaled nine points (4-of-6 FG), five rebounds and a block while
Hanna Thrainsdottir and
Chloe Teter chipped in six points apiece.
NYU's bench outscored CWRU's 34-14, led by Peper, and the Violets controlled the paint scoring 50 points inside as opposed the the Spartans' 20.
The Violets return home on Friday, Febraury 10, to play #10 University of Chicago at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
