Jenny Walker poured in 20 points while
Natalie Bruns had 19 of her own as New York University's
sixth-ranked women's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University, 73-62, on Sunday afternoon at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
The two forwards also had six rebounds apiece while Walker notched three blocks and Bruns swatted two as the Violets (15-2, 5-2 UAA) picked up their fourth straight University Athletic Association (UAA) victory.
"The UAA is stacked this year, that's a top team in any other conference," said head coach
Meg Barber. "Case gave us their best shot and I was really proud of how our players sustained their effort for four full quarters."
There were six lead changes and three ties in the first quarter as the Spartans (12-6, 3-4 UAA) held a slim, 13-12 lead after one.
Back-and-forth play continued in the second as the score was tied 25-25 with with 2:21 to go before halftime. CWRU then closed the quarter on a 7-3 run, including a bucket from Kayla Characklis with eight seconds left, to maintain a 32-28 advantage at the break.
Both sides shot above 50 percent from the field in the third but Case Western Reserve remained on top, leading 54-48 with 17 seconds on the clock. But, NYU's
Honor Culpepper converted an and-one after a smooth dump-off pass from
Belle Pellecchia with three seconds remaining which cut the Violets' deficit to three (54-51) entering the fourth.
Bruns delivered eight fourth-quarter points and NYU shot 8-of-11 from the floor in the final period, winning the quarter 22-8 to secure its 14th double-digit win of the season.
"Calming down a little offensively and getting the ball inside (allowed us to come back)," Barber added. "Bruns and Jenny just dominated the paint late in the game and (we had) some really key stops on the other end and some great box outs leading to a full stop.
"We're getting everyone's best shot so I think for us it's just about being prepared from the tip every time we have an opportunity to wear this uniform."
It was Walker's fourth game with 20-or-more points this year and ninth in double figures while Bruns has scored 10-plus in all 17 outings.
Pellecchia nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 10 points, nine boards and seven assists.
Erica Miller added nine points while
Caroline Peper chipped in eight.
NYU won despite turning the ball over 15 times as opposed to CWRU's six, but the Violets outscored the visitors 44-34 in the paint.
After today's results around the UAA, NYU is now tied for second with UChicago and trail first-place WashU by one game.
Next up for the Violets is a return to the road, facing UAA foe Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, February 3, in Pittsburgh, PA.
