Women's Basketball Routs Chicago

#6 Violets Defeat #13 Maroons 80-44

The sixth-ranked New York University women's basketball team won its seventh straight game, defeating #13-ranked University of Chicago 80-44 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, February 10, in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets upped their season record to 18-2 overall, 8-2 in the UAA, while handing Chicago (17-4, 6-4) its fourth loss of the season.

NYU never trailed in the contest, scoring the first four points and leading by as many as eight in the first quarter. The second quarter was even more lopsided, as the Violets outscored the Maroons 26-8 and led 39-18 at halftime.

Chicago was held to 28.5 percent (8-for-28) shooting in the first half, while NYU connected at a 45.5 (15-for-33) percent clip.

The Violets kept pounding away in the third quarter, opening up a 37-point lead, 64-27, with just under two minutes remaining.

The lead again grew to 37 in the final minute of the fourth before a Chicago free throw concluded the scoring.

Chicago had handed NYU its first loss of the season, 71-57, on January 13 in the Windy City.

"It was huge to come back and redeem ourselves after what happened in Chicago," said Head Coach Meg Barber

Brooklyn Shelton led four Violets in double-figures with a season-high 16 points. Jenny Walker contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Caroline Peper scored 11  points and Natalie Bruns had 10.

Belle Pellecchia recorded a game-high nine assists to go with seven rebounds, four steals and four points. Mary Kate Fahey registered a career-high nine points.

"Belle was phenomenal at point and it led to some great transition buckets," Barber added.

NYU shot 51.6 percent (32-for-62) for the game, while Chicago managed a 29.3 percent (17-for-58) mark.

The Violets are back in action this Sunday, February 12, as they host 22nd-ranked Washington University in a first-place UAA showdown at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.
