The New York University
fifth-ranked men's swimming & diving team successfully edged out Division II West Chester University of Pennsylvania in their dual meet on Saturday in West Chester, PA.
Winning 121 to 120, the Violets took first place in seven events. The diving squad played a significant role with
Hunter Whitbeck securing victories in both the one-meter (255.08) and three-meter (267.68) events.
William Hopkins placed second in the three-meter with a score of 232.58 to help lift the Violets over the Rams.
"Hunter put together a good list prior to the University Athletic Association Championship," head diving coach
Todd Kolean said. "Will Hopkins narrowly beat out the WCU diver by .1 points to help the swimmers win the meet. I think
Makai Harder had his best meet since diving at NYU."
In the main pool,
Ajay Watanakun commanded the sprint freestyle, winning the 50 in 21.15 and the 100 in 46.41.
Leo Han also won two events, defeating the 200 freestyle field with a time of 1:43.31 for a personal best. He continued his unscathed 100 butterfly record this season with a first-place time of 49.83.
Jaeden-Hans Yburan and
Gavin Egerton went 1-2 in the 200 individual medley, clocking 1:54.26 and 1:56.61, respectively.
"They raced super well and had so much energy," head swimming coach
Trevor Miele said. "The meet was a lot of fun."
The team's victory in West Chester wrapped up their dual meets for the season with a 5-2 record. They will next compete in the UAA Championships in Atlanta, GA, on February 8-11.
