New York University's men's and women's track and field teams opened competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, on Saturday.
The Violet men sit in sixth place as a team while the women are in seventh after the day's events.
Multiple women's runners performed well in preliminary races, qualifying for tomorrow's finals. The top eight finishers in each event advance to the championship race.
Isre'al Conerly shined on the track, finishing second in her heat and fifth overall in the 400-meter prelims with a time of 58.16 seconds. She found similar success in the 200, placing second in her heat and fifth overall once again with a 25.05-second finish. Her 200-meter time tied the program's outdoor record.
Michelle Uvieghara scored points in shot put, claiming seventh place in the event with a 10.98-meter toss.
Fiona Kelleher, competing in the 400-meter hurdles, also secured a spot in tomorrow's finals after finishing sixth overall with a time of 1:06.74.
Camryn Menninger performed well in the women's 10k finals as the fifth runner to cross the finish line (37:44.83) to score points for the Violets.
For the men, three student-athletes scored points in the shot put.
Owen Mountford placed second (14.31m),
Michael Mangual third (14.00m) and
Marc Santonocito eighth (13.12m) as NYU was well represented in the event. Mountford also scored in the hammer throw, coming in sixth overall with a 45.48-meter showing.
Points were also scored in the javelin throw as
Rudra Amin finished seventh (46.02m) and
Chad Belick eighth (45.62m) to continue a quality day for the throwers.
On the track, many Violet men also earned finals-qualifying times.
Zion Glover came in fifth overall in the 100-meter dash prelims (10.94) while
Kamden Martin placed eighth (11.08).
In the 800-meter run,
Jon Diaz nabbed the eighth and final qualifying spot after crossing the finish line in 1:53.27.
Brian Kaiserman placed fifth overall in the 200-meter prelims with a time of 22.11 seconds.
The second day of the UAA Outdoor Championships begins with field events tomorrow, April 24, at 10:00 am.
