In its return to United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action, the New York University men's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought, five-set match to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night in Brooklyn.
NYU (8-9, 3-3 UVC) hit a season-high .429 despite the loss, holding New Paltz (16-4, 4-0, UVC) to a .248 clip. Set scores were 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 11-25, 15-12.
Set one featured 12 lead changes and 11 ties. The Hawks grabbed the momentum with a 6-1 run to jump ahead 19-14 and never relinquished the lead.
The second was also back-and-forth to start as NYU led by just two, 13-11, in the middle of the frame. The Violets found their groove from there, outscoring New Paltz 12-5 over the remainder of the period to tie the match.
New Paltz opened the third with a 7-3 lead after a John Ronan kill, but NYU responded with a 6-1 spurt to take a one-point advantage (9-8). The score was tied six more times until the Hawks broke away behind six kills from Chris Shanley, setting themselves up to win in four.
NYU didn't let that happen though, taking set four easily as back-to-back
Ry Kagan kills closed it out and pushed the conference clash to a decisive fifth set.
A kill from
Owen Wahlgren gave the Violets an 8-7 edge in the fifth, but New Paltz countered with four straight points to put the visitors on the verge of victory. NYU came within one point three more times before Shanley and Tim Drake delivered a pair of kills to end it.
