The New York University Men's Volleyball Team celebrated a victory and its seniors with a sweep of Ramapo College on Wednesday, March 30, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
Playing their final home match of the 2022 season, the Violets (9-9) defeated the Roadrunners (12-11) by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-20.
Prior to the match, NYU honored its six seniors:
Race Agcaoili,
Tyler Flood,
James Haag,
Matthew Noel, Owen Walhgren, and
Ryan Whealen.
"This has been a special class because they had to go through the whole pandemic," explained Head Coach Jose Pina. "When they were sophomores, their season ended prematurely. The next season was canceled entirely. It was a struggle, but they kept working out. Sometimes they thought they might miss their senior year as well. So, it's a special class that persevered."
All six contribute dto the Violets' victory on Wednesday:
Agcaoili: 4 digs, 1 assist
Flood: 4 kills, 1 block, 1 dig
Haag: 3 digs, 2 kills, 2 assists, 2 blocks
Noel: 5 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks
Walhgren: 11 kills, 6 blocks, 2 digs
Whealen: 27 assists, 7 digs, 3 blocks, 3 aces, 2 kills
"They all worked hard for their chance to perform and to play again, and I'm very happy they've had the opportunity," Pina added.
SET-UPS:
-
First Set was tied 6-6 when NYU scored three straight and held the lead the rest of the way.
- NYU scored the first three points of the
Second Set and never trailed. Leading by just two, 15-13, the Violets scored the next four points to break it open.
- The Roadrunners scored the first point of the
Third Set, but that was their only lead. The Violets scored the next three points and led the rest of the way.
"It was important to get a victory and to see the guys execute what we've been practicing and preaching," Pina concluded. "Tonight they performed pretty well. Hopefully, we carry that into the match against MIT on Saturday and then into the UVC (United Volleyball Conference) playoffs."
The Violets complete their regular-season schedule with a match at MIT on Saturday, April 2. First serve in Cambridge, MA, is set for 2:00pm
