The New York University Men's and Women's Diving Teams completed competition at the NCAA Regional Championships at Smith College in Northampton, MA, on Saturday, February 26.
And, on the final day of the two-day event, a pair of Violets qualified for next month's NCAA Division III National Championships.
Hunter Whitbeck, who placed fifth in the three-meter dive (392.10) on Friday and sixth in the one-meter on Saturday with a score of 401.45, will represent the men's team.
"I'm very happy about everyone's performance collectively at this meet," Whitbeck said. "Our team spirit was impeccable and there's nobody I would have rather dove with at one of the last meets of the season."
Issara Schmidt, who was fourth in the one-meter dive on Friday (395.80 points), and eighth in the three-meter on Saturday (383.05), also punched her ticket to Nationals.
"It was a very long weekend and the competition was very tough in this region, especially today but we dove really well," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "Issara and Hunter did exactly what they needed to do today to advance to the National Meet. It was the last meet for super senior
Ashlyn Winship and she didn't disappoint having, arguably, her best meet."
Also for the men,
Sahil Das was seventh (361.65) in Friday's three-meter and took ninth in the one-meter (379.90) on Saturday.
In addition to Schmidt, the women's team had two other top-10 performers in the three-meter dive on Saturday, as Winship (379.80) and
Maria Miao (364.30) finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
"I am so proud of Hunter and Issara for making NCAAs, and of the entire team for the effort they put in this weekend and all year," Winship said. "I really loved getting to spend my last year with this group and can't wait to see what everyone does going forward."
In the one-meter on Friday,
Katherine Nardone was seventh (386.70) and
Rocky Farnell was 10th (366.25).
"My first season at NYU has been filled with a lot of ups and downs and today I was so proud of not just myself, but everyone on the team," said Schmidt. "We showed up to compete and had a really fun time doing it. I am beyond thankful for the support and love I have walked into on this team. Sincerely, none of this could have been possible without them and my awesome coaches."
