The New York University Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams had a strong showing in their second day of competition on Wednesday, February 10, at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, hosted by Emory University, in Atlanta, GA.
Both NYU teams excelled in the 500-yard freestyle as
Graham Chatoor—who set the UAA record in this event in 2020—took first for the men (4:24.75) with
Thomas Pritchard coming in third (4:26.40) and
Connor Vincent right behind him in fourth (4:28.43).
All three men earned NCAA cuts in the event.
The women's 500 free saw
Caitlin Marshall notch a second-place finish (4:55.93) while
Leydn McEvoy finished third with a time of 4:56.43.
"I am really pleased with our performance today," said Head Swimming Coach
Trevor Miele. "We came out swimming very well tonight and got a lot of NCAA cuts. Our men's and women's 500 freestyles were particularly impressive!"
In the women's 200 IM,
Julianna Sosnowski placed second with a time of 2:04.62 and
Candice Saxod finished in eighth and earned a B-cut with a time of 2:06.75. The 400 medley relay team of
Jessica Flynn,
Jolie LeFauve,
Isabella Brosvik, and
Nika Kouznetsova placed second in the event by finishing with an NCAA-selecting time of 3:47.66. Flynn led the relay by swimming the first leg, and her time of 52.91 in the 100 backstroke was another NCAA selection time.
Jaeden-Hans Yburan recorded an-NCAA selection time in the 200 IM (1:49.76), recorded in the 'B' heat as his morning preliminary finish didn't qualify for the finals session. His time was the fourth-fastest in the event, but placed ninth after the eight finalists.
In the men's 50 free,
Ajay Watanakun finished sixth with a time of 20.63. In the 400 medley relay, Yburan led off his squad and went 49.7 in the 100 backstroke leg. As it was the first leg of the relay, his time qualifies as an NCAA cut. The overall team of Yburan,
Jacob Haines,
Alec Reimon, and
John Piccinic came in fifth and earned a B-cut qualifying time of 3:20.60.
Meanwhile, the sole diving event of the day was the men's 3-meter dive. In the morning preliminaries, Violet divers
Hunter Whitbeck,
Sahil Das and
Jack Callaghan placed 10th (402.35), 13th (355.65) and 14th (353.10), respectively. Only the top eight morning preliminary scores advanced to the afternoon finals.
"It was a little rough for the first men's event," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "We probably saw 12 of the top divers in Division III today. We have prepared hard and we were okay, but at this kind of meet we have to be better than okay. We're looking forward to our 1-meter event tomorrow."
The Violet women stand in second place overall with 490 points while Emory University is leading with 660 points. The NYU men are in fourth with 386.5 points and Emory leads the pack with 563 points.
The women's divers did not see action today, but they will return to the pool alongside the swimmers tomorrow, February 11, for the third of competition.
