New York University's men's tennis team was in action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals on Friday and Saturday, hosted by Drew University in Madison, NJ.
Three Violets played in the main singles draw with
Alex Yang advancing to the round of 16. He defeated Eric Stein of Hamilton College (6-1, 6-1) to open the tournament, before winning 7-5, 6-3 over St. Lawrence University's Nathan Turtledove in the second round. However, Abraham Yohannes of RPI bested Yang, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 16 to end the senior's run.
Joseph He and
Zachary Freier also played in the singles draw, both dropping their first-round matches.
In the main doubles draw, Yang and Freier teamed up to defeat a duo from Bard College (8-1) in the first round, eventually falling to opponents from Hamilton in the second round.
He and
Andy Watterson also earned a first-round doubles victory, taking a close match, 8-7 (7), over a pair from Drew. But, another doubles duo from Hamilton ended up defeating them (8-5) in the second round.
NYU found success in the doubles 'B' draw, though, as
Rumaish Khastgir and
Devan Sabapathy were victorious in three straight matches to win their pod. However, due to weather forcing the tournament indoors, the later rounds of the 'B' draw were not played.
The ITA Regionals conclude a brief fall season for the men's tennis squad, as they next take the court in 2023 with a dual match at Haverford College on February 24.
