The New York University Men's and Women's Diving Teams returned to action for the first time in over a month when they competed in the NYU Invitational on Thursday and Friday, January 13-14, at the Palladium Athletic Facility Natatorium.
It was a non-team-scoring meet against University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Carnegie Mellon Universi. The Tartans were unable to travel to New York City from Pittsburgh due to Covid-related issues, so the teams competed from approximately 370 miles apart.
"It was an interesting meet. Instead of hosting in-person because of Covid, we dove virtually against CMU," Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean explained. "There's very few sports that could do something like this."
NYU's
Issara Schmidt (Winona, MN/Winona Senior) was victorious in both the 3-meter dive (514.13) on Thursday and the 1-meter dive (516.15) on Friday. The Violets'
Rocky Farnell (Portland, OR/Lincoln) finished third (487.58) and second (501.45), respectively, in the two events.
"After all of our hard work in the pool during January, it was super fun to see us all perform well at the meet," Schmidt said. "We all do a great job of keeping a great spirit on the pool deck, and I'm so happy to see it pay off."
CMU's Kyle Brothers, Judson and James, dominated the men's events. Judson won the 1-meter (537.53) on Thursday and the 3-meter (563.33) on Friday, while his twin brother placed second (527.03, 555.08), respectively, in both.
Hunter Whitbeck (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) finished fourth in the 3-meter (521.63) for the Violets, while
Sahil Das (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach) (466.28) did likewise in the 1-meter.
"I'm so happy we were able to pull off the virtual meet on such short notice," Whitbeck said. "And I'm really excited for the rest of the season based on what we were able to do at this meet."
The Violets hadn't competed since December 5 at Brown University's Bruno Invitational.
"It went extremely well and allowed our student-athletes to compete against a strong CMU team," Kolean added. "I'm extremely happy how things went and how we showed up to compete."
The Violets will test the waters again on Friday, January 21, at the MIT Tri-Meet in Cambridge, MA.
