Men's Basketball Defeated in UAA Opener

Case Western Reserve Snaps Violets' Five -Game Winning Streak

The New York University Men's Basketball Team was defeated by Case Western Reserve University, 98-71, in the Violets' first University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the 2021-22 season.

The loss snapped the Violets' (9-2, 0-1) five-game winning streak, while the Spartans improved their season record to 12-1, 2-0.

Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL/Marist), who led NYU with 21 points and 11 rebounds, connected on the first bucket of the game and made the ensuing free throw.

However, Case Western Reserve scored the next eight points and led the rest of the way.

The Spartans' biggest lead of the game was 33 points late in the first half.

The Violets trailed 52-24 at halftime and only pulled as close as 23 points the rest of the way despite outscoring their opponents 47-46 in the second half.

Harrison Whatley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Porter Gaud) was the only other Violet to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points. Hayden Peek (Poughkeepsie, NY/Choate Rosemary Hall) added nine points, while Alex Maticiuc (Monaco, Monte-Carlo/St. Thomas More School (Montville, CT)) had eight.

Robert Faller led the Spartans with 19 points.

This was NYU's first game at their temporary home court on the campus of St. Francis College in Brooklyn.

The Violets return to the court to host Carnegie Mellon University at 12:00 pm this Sunday, January 16.
