Swimming & Diving Teams Sweep TCNJ

Men and Women Post Victories

Official Results

The New York University Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams raced to resounding wins at a home dual meet against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) at the Palladium Athletic Facility (PAF) on Saturday, November 6.

The men's team won 200-98 and the women's team was victorious 226-74.

"It was a dominant effort by the men and women," Head Swim Coach Trevor Miele commented. "I was expecting a close meet on the men's side, but it never materialized. Both squads came ready to race and put forth outstanding efforts."

The Violets set out with an early lead due to their dedicated divers.

On the men's side, All-American Hunter Whitbeck won by a 40-point margin in the 3-meter dive with a score of 340.13 points. Jack Callaghan finished second with 300.45 points.

The 1-meter dive was much closer. Whitbeck finished first again with 302.18 points while Callaghan produced another second-place showing (296.33 points).

"Diving at a meet is just different," Callaghan noted. "It's silent and all eyes are on you. You have to be ready for that intensity."

The women also swept their diving events. Freshman Issara Schmidt was first in the 1-meter dive with 322.28 points and in the 3-meter dive with 321.08 points. She came close to the NYU women's 1-meter diving record of 334.13 points, set by Carmen White during the 2017-18 season.

"We've all been working really hard in practice," Schmidt offered. "We've been getting into the weight room a lot this month, so I definitely feel stronger on the board. This was a good meet to show off what we learned."

Rocky Farnell, another freshman diver, came in second in the 1-meter event with 299.55 points and finished fourth in the 3-meter dive with 296.03 points. It was her second regional qualifying score this season.

"We were outstanding," Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean said. "We had seven people qualify for a regional meet. Today was Rocky's and Issara's second time qualifying and everyone else got their first score in."

The swimmers built upon the lead they were given by the divers and cemented the victories with many strong showings.

Julianna Sosnowski finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.81) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (55.76).

"After a hard week of pushing each other in practice, I think the ladies really stepped up this weekend," Sosnowski said. "Everyone was cheering, and we all hyped each other up to swim our best."

On the men's side, Gavin Egerton won both the 400 IM (4:06.81) and the 200 butterfly (1:56.18).

"It was a hard-fought meet and we did the best we could," Egerton explained. "Our goal was just to race and beat the person next to us and that's what we did."

Not every meet features the mile, but the Violets took advantage of the event's inclusion on Saturday. Ashley Brodnick placed first for the women (17:50.96) and Graham Chatoor won his race for the men (15:59.57).

As the season progresses, the Violets are determined to continue their outstanding work ethic both at practice and in meets.

"We still have a lot more hard training ahead of us," Miele remarked. "But I was very happy with their performances today."

The teams will be on the road for their next competitions; the divers will be competing next at the Carnegie Mellon University Diving Invitational (Nov. 19-20) while the swimmers will face Johns Hopkins University at a dual meet on November 20.
