Divers Compete at Carnegie Mellon

Several Violets Hit Qualifying Marks

The New York University Men's and Women's Diving Teams had a strong performance at the Carnegie Mellon Diving Invitational in Pittsburgh, PA, on Friday and Saturday, November 19-20.

The Violets kicked off the weekend with great dives all around on Friday, with the men diving the 3-meter event and the women competing in the 1-meter. Five women placed among the top 10 with Issara Schmidt (Winona, MN/Winona Senior) taking third with a score of 465.30. Katherine Nardone (Weston, MA/Weston) placed fourth with 456.35 points. Ashlyn Winship (Richardson, TX/Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science), Maria Miao (Strewsbury, MA/Strewsbury) and Claire Stephenson (Cleveland, OH/Hathaway Brown School) closed out the top-10 by placing eighth (427.25), ninth (414.05) and 10th (390.40), respectively.

"Everybody has been working so hard to prepare for this meet and it really paid off today," said  Winship. "I'm so proud of how everyone performed and supported each other throughout the competition. Go Violets!"

The men had a successful evening on Friday, as well. Four Violets placed among the top 16. Mitchell Mortenson (Golf, IL/Glenbrook South) took fourth place (473.70) and Hunter Whitbeck (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) placed fifth (465.85). Jack Callaghan (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) landed in 10th with a score of 414.50 and Will Hopkins took 11th, scoring 412.80.

"This was our first invitational of the year," said Mortenson. "Despite the long road trip, we rallied and came together as a team to give our best efforts."

The second day of diving went just as well.

On the women's side, all four Violets landed in the top-10 of the 3-meter event. Miao finished third (448.25) and Winship placed fourth (441.75). In seventh was Nardone (421.60), while Stephenson placed ninth (401.25).

The men's team also had a strong day on Saturday competing in the 1-meter. Callaghan and Whitbeck placed second (447.25) and third (442.20), respectively. Mortenson came in seventh with 400.65 points while Hopkins finished 10th with 374.30.

"It was a really good weekend," commented Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "Ashlyn, Hunter, Katherine, and Maria all got their second NCAA qualifying scores (you must reach it twice to qualify) along with Rocky and Issara who had qualified before. Mitchell had a great 3-meter event, finishing the best on the team and getting his first qualifying score. On the women's side, Maria completely crushed it on the 3-meter."

The NYU Men's and Women's Swimming Teams were in Baltimore this weekend, facing off in a dual meet against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, November 20.

The NYU Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams return to action at the Bruno Invite (Dec 3-5) hosted by Brown University in Providence, RI.
