Coming off a dominant win in their long-awaited return to the court, New York University's Women's Basketball Team convincingly defeated Alvernia University, 82-58, in their 2021-22 home-opener on Saturday, November 13, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
Junior forward
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) showed out in this one, putting up her first double-double of the year with 19 points and a game-high 12 boards.
NYU (2-0) scored the first 10 points of the game, with six coming in transition, but Alvernia (1-1) responded with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to one (14-13) on a Kayla Williams triple. Both sides traded buckets for the remainder of the quarter, with the Violets leading 18-17 after one.
The Violets missed all six of their three-point attempts in the first, but found their stroke in the second, knocking down 3-of-5.
Erica Miller (Alamo, CA/Carondelet) drained back-to-back treys late in the period to turn a four-point lead into 10 as NYU went into the half up 41-29.
The Violets began the second half with a 9-2 spurt to essentially put the game away, taking a 50-31 advantage after a
Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) finish. The Violets shot a red-hot 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the floor in the third and entered the final frame leading 64-47.
Walker scored seven of her 19 points in the fourth and NYU held the Golden Wolves to just 11 points in the quarter to run away with a lopsided win.
Miller finished with 14 points, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, while Janowski added 10, six assists and two steals.
Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) had a great all-around game, totaling 13 points (5-of-7 FG), eights rebounds and five assists.
Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) also chipped in 12 points off the bench.
The Violets are back in action next Saturday, November 20, when they host the NYU Tip-Off Classic featuring Thiel College, Bridgewater State University and Claremont McKenna College. NYU matches up with Thiel on day one of the Classic for a 5:00 pm tip.
