Women's Volleyball Captures Kean Invite

Violets Defeat Lycoming and Host Kean on Saturday

Following two victories on Friday, the New York University women's volleyball team played two matches on the final day of the Kean Invitational, which was held Friday and Saturday, September 13-14, at Kean University in Union, NJ.

In their first match on Saturday, the Violets swept Lycoming College 3-0 ( 25-21, 25-23, 25-15 ). NYU then faced host Kean and posted another straight-set victory (25-21, 25-16, 25-13).

NYU is now 10-1 this season.

"This was a great team effort all-around," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "We executed our game plans in both matches to take away both Kean's and Lycoming's strengths."

Haley Holz (Palatine, IL /Palatine), who was named Tournament MVP, led the Violets over the Warriors (7-5) with 11 kills in the first match. Gretchen Kincade (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) added 10 and Caroline Rapp (Boynton Beach, FL/American Heritage School) finished with nine. Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) had 24 assists, while Veronica Johnson (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) recorded 13. Jacqueline Kupeli (Danville, CA/Monte Vista), an All-Tournament Team selection, led the way with 16 digs.

NYU trailed by as many as four points in the first set before rallying for the win. In set two, the Violets were behind 23-22 before scoring the final three points. The Violets scored the first three points of the final set and never trailed.

Against the Cougars (7-5) in the second match, Holz again led the Violets in kills (19). Dao was tops again in assists (20) with Johnson adding 13. Kupeli also kept the pedal to the metal with 21 digs.

The Violets started slowly against Kean, dropping the first three points of the first set. However, with the score tied 18-18, NYU rallied for the next three points and held the lead the rest of the way. In set two, NYU broke a 9-9 tied with five straight points en route to the victory. Then, in the final set, a 4-0 run after trailing 6-5 gave the visitors the lead for good.

"Offensively, we were very balanced and everyone was contributing to us earning points," Brown added. "I'm looking forward to the upcoming week to see us continue to work hard as we prepare for Wednesday's match and then our first UAA action."

The Violets return to action this Wednesday, September 18, when they host the College of Mt. St. Vincent. First serve at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility is set for 7:00pm.
