Women's Volleyball Sweeps Mt. St. Vincent

Violets Now 11-1 This Season

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated the College of Mount St. Vincent in three sets on Wednesday, September 18, at the Violets' Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (11-1) got off to a quick start in the match and were never seriously threatened in producing the 25-10, 25-19, 25-16 victory over the Dolphins (6-5).

NYU only trailed once the entire evening, faling behind 1-0 before breezing to the first-set win.

The Violets scored the first seven points of the second set and led by as many as nine. However, Mount St. Vincent was able to pull within three, 21-18. But, NYU scored the next four points to thwart the Dolphins' comeback attempt.

The hosts got off to another quick start in the third set, scoring the first four points. The Dolphins closed to within 6-5, but the Violets countered with the next three points. Mount St. Vincent again pulled within one, 11-10. A 5-1 NYU run followed and the Violets never led by less than three the rest of the way.

The well-balanced attack featured three Violets with six kills: Haley Holxz Abby Ausmus (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day School) and Maddie DeJong (Houston, TX/Second Baptist School). Jacqueline Kupeli (Danville, CA/Monte Vista) (13) had double-digit digs while a pair of Violets, Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) (14) and Veronica Johnson (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) (13) added double-digit assists.

"We had a chance to work on different things and some plays that we hope to execute this weekend when we start UAA play," said Head Coach Andrew Brown, who recorded his 99th NCAA Division III career victory on Wednesday.

The Violets begin University Athletic Association (UAA) play when they compete at UAA Round Robin #1 this weekend. They face the University of Chicago (12pm) and Washington University in St. Louis (4pm) on Saturday, September 21, then Case Western Reserve University at 10AM on Sunday the 22nd. All the matches are being hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
