The New York University women's soccer team earned its first victory of the season as it blanked Rutgers University-Newark 2-0 on Friday, August 30, in Newark, NJ.
NYU controlled the majority of the game, outshooting the Scarlet Raiders 18-4 overall and 13-2 in shots on target.
The first tally for NYU came from an own goal that rebounded off of Rutgers' defender inside the post in the 10th minute.
Senior Julia Raith (Rutherford, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) tabbed her first goal of the season thanks to an assist from freshman Gabriella Funk (Freemont, CA/Irvington) in the 58th minute to increase the lead. Raith, Funk and junior Nalani Ogawa (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) led the team in shots with three each.
"It was great to start off the season with a win on the road," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "We have lots of players who came in fit and ready to contribute, so we were able to utilize our depth."
Junior goalkeeper Meghan Marhan posted the shutout, the ninth of here career, saving both opportunities she faced.
"We will be looking to fine tune some things in the final third going forward," Canning added.
The Violets return to action on Sunday, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY, to face Vassar College. Kickoff against the Brewers is slated for 2:00pm.
