Violets Defeat Rutgers-Newark in Home Doubleheader

The New York University softball team swept a doubleheader from Rutgers-Newark University on Tuesday, March 26, at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.

Playing their first home games of the season, the Violets moved to 9-3 while the Scarlet Raiders fell to 6-10.

The host Violets used a four-run bottom of the seventh inning for a 10-9 comeback victory in game one before recording a 6-1 win in the nitecap.

Solo home runs by Diana King and Serena Ponciano, as well as a two-run double by King, were the big hits that lifted NYU into a 6-6 tie through five innings of the opener.

After Rutgers-Newark scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead, the Violets showed resiliency and received a lot of help in posting their comeback. NYU managed only two hits in their winning rally, but the Scarlet Knights committed three errors as Mary Tindall wound up knocking in the winning run on a groundout to shortstop.

In the second game, the Violets again benefited from some sloppy play by their opponents, who made six errors, three in NYU's five-run fifth inning. It had been a tight 1-0 Violet lead until the breakthrough frame.

Karissa Zubulake pitched a gem for the Violets in the nitecap, striking out a career-high 11 batters and allowing only one run.

"Karissa threw a great game. She stayed ahead of the hitters and went right after them," said Head Coach Now-Allah James.

King and Ponciano each recorded three hits in the second game. Together, they scored eight runs over the two games sharing the top two spots in the lineup.

"They compliment each other well, and that's a great thing," James added.

The Violets return right back to the diamond for a doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00pm in Weehawken, NJ.
