Softball Team Splits

Violets Win One and Lose One at Stevens Tech

The New York University softball team split a doubleheader with Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, March 27, in Weehawken, NJ.

NYU (10-4) won the first game 3-1 but dropped the second to Stevens (6-8) by a score of 2-1 in eight innings.

The opener featured a pitchers' duel between the Violets Karissa Zubulake and the Ducks' Christine LaRochelle. Only one run was scored through the first six innings. That singleton was produced by NYU when Kalena Paredes' RBI double plated Mary Tindall in the fourth.

In the top of the seventh, the Violets pushed two runs across with a two-out rally. Diana King's single and stolen base put things into motion, while Serena Ponciano and Claire Stefanelli soon followed with RBI singles.

Zubulake allowed two hits in the bottom of the frame and allowed her only run. But, with two on and one out, she was able to get Stevens' last two batters out to secure the victory.

Zubulake struck out seven and did not walk a batter one day after striking out a career-high 11 against Rutgers-Newark University. King, Stefanelli and Morgan Clemens each had two hits in the game.

The nightcap also resulted in a pitcher's dual, this time featuring Maggie Swan for NYU and Marissa Cappello for Stevens.

The game remained scoreless until the Violets broke through for a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout by Ashley Mains. But, the Ducks plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off win.

Swan went the distance for NYU, allowing only four hits while striking out seven. Cappello threw all eight innings for the Ducks.

The Violets return to action this weekend when they travel to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, to open University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Violets and Spartans are scheduled to play doubleheaders on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, beginning at 2:00pm and 1:00pm, respectively.
