The New York University men's basketball team defeated host College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) 74-70 on Wednesday, December 4, in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets, who last played on December 1 in an 88-73 win over Rosemont College, improved their record to 5-3 while the Dolphins fell to 2-5.
The Violets and Dolphins were evenly matched through the first 10 minutes of action. NYU only trailed once in the first half and took its biggest lead of the game, 34-28, on a pair of
Jaden Narwal (Vancouver, Canada/Collingwood School) free throws
with 3:52 left in the first half.
NYU shot 50% (13-of-26) from the field over the first 20 minutes and were tied with the Dolphins 35-35 at halftime.
The Violets fell behind 47-44 with 15:49 on the clock, but NYU rallied back to take a six-point lead, 55-49, three minutes later.
The score remained close and was tied for the final time at 67-67 with 2:18 left to play. But, NYU secured the win after back-to-back layups from
Cade Hoppe (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge) and
Miles Somerville (Bowie, MD/Georgetown Prep), taking a 71-67 lead and never looking back.
In the last minute of play,
Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep) added two free throws and a layup to lock-in the 74-70 win.
"Any road win is a good win," said Head Coach
Dagan Nelson. "We played inside and out in the second half with plus-16 on the glass, which is a big point of emphasis for us."
Ethan Feldman (New York, NY/The Salisbury School) led the way for NYU, posting 18 points. He shot 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Hoppe (15) and
Macarchuk (14) also scored in double figures.
Jimmy Martinelli (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) contributed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
"Ethan's ability to make timely three's gave us the separation we needed," Nelson explained. "We look forward to continuing to get better everyday."
Wednesday's road win marks the fourth-straight victory for NYU.
The Violets are back in action on Wednesday, December 11, when they return to the Sportsplex for a "road" game with host Hunter College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm and will be preceded by a women's game between the two schools beginning at 5pm.
