Men's Basketball Drops Opener

Violets Fall to Oberlin 76-62

The New York University men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a 76-62 loss to Oberlin College on Saturday, November 9, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

The Violets led by as many as five points in the first half and by a score of 35-31 at halftime. They shot 50% (13-26) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and held the Yeomen to 40.6% (13-32).

However, NYU could not maintain the momentum over the final 20 minutes.

The Violets still led 39-38 following Ethan Feldman's (New York, NY/The Salisbury School) layup with 15:26 remaining.

The Yeoman followed with a 9-0 run, which was halted by Jaedon Khubani (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton)'s three-pointer with 11:43 left. But, the visitors kept the pressure on and extended their lead to as many as 21 points, 72-51, to solidify their victory.

"It was a tale of two halves, obviously," said Head Coach Dagan Nelson. "When they went on their run in the second half we didn't respond."

Khubani led NYU with 13 points in his collegiate debut. Feldman scored 12 points and Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep) added 10.

Jimmy Martinelli (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) paced the way for NYU with seven rebounds.

The Violets are right back in action on Wednesday, November 13 when they host Hobart College at the Sportsplex. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
