2016 Men's Tennis Season Review

Violets End Season with Win Over UAA-Foe Rochester

The New York University men's tennis team finished with a 5-10 overall record and a seventh-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship under ninth-year Head Coach Horace Choy.

NYU opened its 2015-16 season at The College of New Jersey Invitational on September 11 in Ewing, NJ. The Violets went 3-5 in doubles play, winning two out of four Flight-A matches, as well as one of four Flight-B contests.

"It was a good start to the season," said Horace Choy. "I was interested in how the newcomers would play, and I was happy with how they competed."

The Violets completed their fall season at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on September 26 in Poughkeepsie, NY. In singles play, junior Umberto Setter advanced to the Round of 16. In doubles play, Setter and freshman Benedict Teoh posted a win over their opponents from Hobart College before falling in the second round to Skidmore College.

After dropping their two opening matches of the spring season, the Violets bounced back with consecutive wins against Vassar College (6-3) and Hobart (7-2).

Junior Matt DeMichiel was named UAA Athlete of the Week on March 7 for his straight-set victories at #5 singles against Skidmore (6-3, 7-5) on March 5 and Vassar (6-1, 6-0) on March 7. At #3 doubles, DeMichiel teamed up with freshman Yanik Parsch to deliver an 8-3 win against Vassar.

Following a tight 5-4 defeat against Oberlin College on April 3, NYU defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy 6-3 on April 10 in New London, CT. Setter posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #3 singles and partnered with freshman Shrikar Kundur for a 9-7 win at #2 doubles.

The Violets closed the regular season with an emphatic 9-0 victory against Baruch College, sweeping all three doubles and all six singles contests, while posting two double bagels as sophomore Samuel Khoshbin at #4 singles and Parsch at #6 defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-0.

"It was a thoroughly dominating performance by our players," said Choy. "Our guys really put forth a great effort and it showed from top to bottom."

NYU finished seventh at the UAA Championship, defeating the University of Rochester 6-3 in the seventh-place match on April 23 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL. The Violets were victorious over the Yellowjackets in one of the three doubles matches and five out of the six singles contests.

DeMichiel was named Second Team All-UAA for his performances at #5 singles. The Hewlett, NY, native recorded NYU's lone victory in the Violets' first-round defeat to Emory (6-3, 7-6) and posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory his Case Western Reserve University opponent in the second round. Against Rochester, DeMichiel won 6-3, 6-1 and finished the campaign with a 14-5 singles record.

"We were happy to end the season with a win," said Choy. "We lost to Rochester just the week before and the guys stepped it up to reverse that result."

The Violets also received accolades for their success off the court, as DeMichiel, seniors David Zumwalt, Sidd Thangirala, and junior Sammy Aronson each earned UAA Spring All-Academic honors.
