The New York University softball team split a pair of games against Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham on Sunday, April 17, in Madison, NJ.
The Violets (11-13) won the second game by a score of 15-6 after falling to the Devils (14-10) in game one with a 5-3 result.
"It felt good to get back out there after a two-and-a-half week break," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "I thought the team played really well."
In the opener, the Violets opened a 3-0 lead when
Claire Stefanelli and
Molly Webber hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth inning. FDU-Florham came back strong with a solo shot of their own in the bottom of the frame, which was followed by a four-run fifth inning that put the Devils ahead for good.
Karissa Zubulake started and went four innings, giving up two earned runs, striking out four and allowing four hits. Jacqueline Trembley relieved her and allowed three runs before
Cassi Parulis came on and pitched 1.1 shutout innings.
"Our pitching locked them down, but unfortunately we went cold at the plate," continued James.
In the second game, NYU was in control from the get-go, putting up five runs in the top of the first. Webber did most of the damage with her second homer of the afternoon, this time a three-run blast.
After the Devils responded with a pair of runs, the Violets countered with a pair of their own in the second inning, highlighted by a
Kahala Bonsignore home run.
After FDU-Florham cut the deficit to 7-5, NYU scored eight unanswered runs. The team put one run across the plate in the third frame and four in the fifth, before
Diana King put an exclamation point on the offensive barrage with a sixth-inning three-run dinger to put the Violets ahead 15-5.
Parulis opened game two on the mound as well, pitching 1.1 innings while allowing eight hits and five earned runs.
Sydni Holtz got the win after throwing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
"Our bats got hot and after giving up those five runs, our pitching really locked them down," said James.
