Softball Sweeps Farmingdale

Violets Improve to .500

The New York University softball team improved to .500 on the season after sweeping Farmingdale State College 6-3 and 10-0 at home on Wednesday, April 20, at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.

The Violets (13-13) reached .500 for the second time this season and exceeded their victory total of last year (12), while the Rams (14-14) fell to the .500 mark with the two losses.

NYU fell behind early in the first game, as Farmingdale State scored two first-inning runs. However, the Violets' starter Karissa Zubulake settled down after that and allowed only one more run the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, the Violets' offense got rolling in the third inning, putting four runs on the board. the biggest blow coming on a two-RBI double by Kahala Bonsignore, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Dakota Damiani.

Molly Webber added her fourth home run of the season in the fourth and a RBI double in the sixth to account for the rest of the scoring, while Sydni Holtz pitched a scoreless final two innings for her first save.

"We did start a little slow, but then we picked it up pretty quickly," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Karissa picked it up and held her own and then Sydni came in and did a great job."

The second game was never in doubt, as Diana King went the distance in the shortened five-inning affair, not allowing a baserunner until there were two outs in the fourth inning. She wound up with a three-hitter, allowing only one walk and striking out eight.

"I went in and hit my spots, and that was my goal," King said. "I was able to not tense up when there were 3-0 counts and I was able to fight my way back."

The offense gave King all the support she needed in the first inning, as all nine hitters went to the plate and the first four scored. Ashley Mains' two-run single was the biggest hit of the frame.

The Violets added three more runs in the second inning, then Bonsignore crushed a three-run homer in the third to complete the scoring.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Bonsignore finished the day 3-for-6 with five RBIs and four runs scored.

- Webber had three hits and knocked in three runs.

- Batting leadoff in both games, King scored three runs, had two hits, a RBI, and stolen base.

- Val Schwein went 2-for-3 in the nitecap, scoring two runs, knocking in one, and stealing a base.

"We hit the ball hard all day, put pressure on the defense and ran the bases well," James explained. "We did all the little things today. Any little mistake they made we took advantage of."

The Violets return to the field this Friday, April 22, when they take to the road to face the College of Staten Island. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.
