Baseball Defeated at UAA Championship

Violets Fall to Brandeis 8-1

The New York University baseball team was defeated by Brandeis University 8-1 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, FL, on Monday, March 7.

The Violets (2-5, 0-2 UAA) did not get their first hit until the fifth inning, a two-out single to right field by Christian Bloom.

NYU scored its only run of the game against the Judges (4-1, 1-1) in the sixth. Jack Walter tripled to lead off the frame. Ryan McLaughlin then lined out to second and Jake Smith struck out swinging. However, Adrian Spitz followed with a double to left to plate the Violets' lone run.

Brandeis starter Sean O'Neill went eight innings to record the victory. He struck out nine Violets while only allowing three hits, one walk and the one earned run.

NYU starter Colman Hendershot got off to a rough start, allowing three runs in the first two innings. However, he settled down and gave up only one the rest of the way. His final line was five innings, three hits, five walks, a strikeout, and only two earned runs allowed.

"I thought Colman did a great job of getting ground balls," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "We just have to make sure that when we're pitching well we play good defense."

Unfortunately, that was not the case on Monday as the Violets committed five errors leading to three unearned runs.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Michael Vokulich had NYU's third hit, a single in the ninth.

- Jarret Weiss pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Violets.

- Jacob Bader struck out two batters in his two innings of work.

- Greg Heineman led the Judges with three of their nine hits, including a solo home run in the fifth.

"Our guys have to make sure that they come prepared to play all the time," Kimbler said. "They just can't turn things on and off whenever they feel like it. You have to be ready to compete from the first pitch to the last pitch. If they don't compete, this is what's going to happen."

The Violets get right back into action on Tuesday when they face Washington University in St. Louis. First pitch at Sanford Memorial Stadium is set for 11:00 am.
