Baseball Falls to WashU in Third UAA Contest

Violets Defeated 11-3 by Bears in Sanford, FL

The New York University baseball team suffered an 11-3 loss to Washington University in St. Louis in its third game of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Tuesday, March 8. The Championship is being held from Sunday-Sunday, March 6-13, at the Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, FL.

"We are still struggling with crucial moments of a game and those moments can swing one way or the other," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "Unfortunately, it is the latter for us right now. The staff and myself have to work harder."

The Violets (2-6, 0-3 UAA) were held hitless by the Bears (8-3, 2-1 UAA) through the first two innings and trailed 4-0 entering the road half of the third.

Scott Hilbrandt led off the inning with a walk, followed by a pair of singles from Billy Griffo and Jeremy Wayne to load the bases with no outs. Jack Walter then reached on an RBI infield single to second and plated Hilbrandt from third. Unfortunately, NYU was unable to capitalize further that inning and the score remained 4-1.

WashU put one run across in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to go up 11-1. The Violets scratched another run across in the top of the sixth.

Colman Hendershot reached on an error by the Bears' third baseman with two outs. Adrian Spitz followed with an RBI triple to left to plate Hendershot.

No more runs scored until the top half of the eighth when NYU plated the final run of the game. Jack Elias approached the plate in a bases-loaded, one-out situation and put the ball in the air to centerfield. Ryan McLaughlin scored from third on the sacrifice fly.

Michael Vokulich got the start for NYU and went 4.0 innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and two walks with a strikeout and a wild pitch. Four other Violets combined to throw four innings, three scoreless.

"Our backend relievers pitched very well this afternoon," continued Kimbler.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Wayne finished 3-for-4 with a double.

- Spitz was 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and triple.

NYU will return to the field tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, March 9, when it faces Case Western Reserve University at 2:00 pm.
