Baseball Edged in Extra Innings

Violets Drop 7-6 Decision to Brandeis

The New York University baseball team was defeated 7-6 in 11 innings by Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship game on Saturday, March 12, in Sanford, FL.

The Violets (4-8, 2-5 UAA) scored in the top of the first for its first of five leads in the contest. However, every time NYU scored, Brandeis (5-5, 2-5) did the same.

The game saw a lot of early scoring, with each team plating runs in the all of the first six innings except the second.

After starter Cameron Serapilio-Frank went six innings, Paul Gadaleta did a superb job in three shutout innings of relief. He allowed only two hits, struck out two and didn't walk a batter.

"We've stressed being able to pitch well with a lead or a tie, and Paul did that for us today," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler.

The score remained tied at 6-6 from the end of the sixth until the 11th. However, the Judges finally pushed home the winning run on a one-out double followed by a game-winning walk-off single by Greg Heineman.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Adrian Spitz went 3-for-6 with a RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

- Colman Hendershot, Jonathan Iaione and Michael Vokulich each had to hits for the Violets.

- CJ Picerni had a team-best two RBIs.

- NYU stole five bases in the game without getting caught.

"We're a talented team, but we have to get better at situational baseball," KImbler said. "Until we start moving runners and getting the big hit when we need it, we're not going to win these games."

The Violets conclude action at the UAA Championship tomorrow. NYU will face Washington University in St. Louis at Sanford Memorial Stadium at 2:00 pm.
