ResultsThe New York University men's tennis team completed their first day of play at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/International Tennis Association (ITA) Championships on Friday, September 25, at Vassar College in Pughkeepsie, NY.
In singles play, three Violets-- juniors
Matt DeMichiel (6-1, 4-6, 10-3),
Sammy Aronson (6-4, 6-1) and
Umberto Setter (6-2, 7-5), won their first match to advance to the second round of the tournament. In the second round, Setter, the #3 ranked singles player in the tournament, defeated Skidmore College's Steven Koulouris 6-2, 6-2, and will compete in the Round of 16 tomorrow.
"Umberto had a rough second set in his first match, but as he's shown, he's resilient and can fight through adversity," said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy. "He's got a tough match tomorrow, but I'm hoping for good things from him."
In doubles play, DeMichiel and freshman
Shrikar Kundur lost a close match (8-6) to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Sherman Uyeno and McKinley Grimes. Setter and freshman
Benedict Teoh, the #6 ranked doubles pair in the tournament, are currently tied 6-6 with Hobart College's Jonah Salita and Jonathan Atwater. The match was suspended due to darkness and will be completed tomorrow at 8:00 am.
