The New York University softball team split a home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 8, against Montclair State University at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx.
The Violets (5-17) dropped the first half of the doubleheader 11-0 in five innings to the Redhawks (6-14), but bounced back strong in the nightcap to come away with a 9-5 victory.
After starting both games of NYU's victorious doubleheader at SUNY Old Westbury on Tuesday,
Jacqueline Tremblay was once again in the circle for the Violets in game one against Montclair State. The sophomore hurler put in a quality start over five innings, allowing just three earned runs. Unfortunately, NYU's defense was charged with seven errors en route to the Redhawks eight unearned runs.
"I thought she did pretty well today, but we didn't play as strong defensively in the first game as we should have," said NYU Head Coach Now-Allah James. "It was uncharacteristic of us, but we bounced back well in the second game. I'm very proud of Jackie for her effort over the past couple of days."The Violets came back with a nice performance from
Sage Scheiwiller in the circle in game two, as the rookie tossed a complete game. The freshman allowed two earned runs while striking out six batters.
NYU fell down 2-0 early to Montclair State in the top of the first, but came back to take the lead after scoring one run in the bottom half of the first, second and third innings.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 5-3 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Violets stormed right back with four in the home half to take an advantage they would not relinquish.
"They played each game independently and had a short memory," continued James. "They forgot about the first game and came out and hit, played defense and pitched well. It was a complete team win."NOTABLES:- Scheiwiller had a nice day at the plate, as well. The rookie was 6-for-7 with two runs scored.
"Sage was phenomenal today at the plate and pitching," said James.-
Kahala Bonsignore was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day, walking twice and scoring two runs.
"Between Sage and Kahala in the lineup, we're a very hard team to pitch against," James said.-
Marisa Bella went 3-for-5 at the plate.
NYU will return to the field when it travels to Madison, NJ, for a scheduled 4:00 pm doubleheader at Drew University on Friday, April 10.
