Softball Drops Twinbill in Florida

Violets Fall to Emory and Brandeis at UAA Championship

The New York University softball team fell to #8 (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Emory University and Brandeis University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte, FL, on Friday March 13.

The Violets (0-11, 0-7 UAA) lost by scores of 14-1 and 12-4, respectively, in a pair of five-inning contests.

Seeking the program's first-ever victory, NYU scored four runs in the top of the first against Brandeis (5-5, 2-5) in the second game. Kahala Bonsignore had a two-run double in the frame, while the other two runs scored on an error.

The Violets' lead did not last very long, however, as the Judges scored two in the first, four in the second, three in the third, and three in the fourth to dash any hopes of NYU recording its first victory.

"We had the momentum and we gave it right back," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "We just can't do that. You have to keep scoring."

Sage Scheiwiller went the distance for NYU, striking out two.

"She had to go the whole way," James explained. "We used two pitchers in the first game and we are short-staffed right now."

In addition to Bonsignore, other Violets to collect a hit against Brandeis were Scheiwiller, Colby Tarsitano, Rachel Fulton, Val Schwein, and Molly Webber (double).

In the opener, a seven-run first inning by Emory (14-2, 4-2) off of Natalie Evans settled this one early. The Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate in an inning that was highlighted by Gracie Taber's grand slam.

The Violets limited the damage after that, but could not put a run across until the final inning when Tarsitano doubled with one out. Marisa Bella singled her to third and Bonsignore followed with a RBI single to drive home NYU's only run.

Bonsignore also had a single in the fourth inning.

Schwein and Webber also contributed singles to the Violets' seven-hit attack.

"The best thing I can say about the day is that the more experience we're accumulating, the closer we are to playing better and getting that first win," James added.

The Violets will be back on the field tomorrow for games against #19 University of Rochester (10:00 am) and #23 Washington University-St. Louis (1:00 pm).
