Softball Defeated by #9 Rochester

Violets Fall 10-2

The New York University softball team was defeated by the University of Rochester 10-2 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte Springs, FL, on Wednesday, March 11.

The Violets (0-7, 0-3) stayed with the #9-ranked (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Yellowjackets (5-1, 3-0) through the first few innings, but a five-run fourth gave Rochester the lead for good.

In that fourth inning, the Violets committed an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball. Starter Samantha Block (0-1) was removed after 3.1 innings, having given up five runs, though only three were earned.

"I thought Sam pitched a good game. We played with one of the top teams in the country for four innings," said NYU Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Every game we have that one bad inning, and that's what's cost us ballgames. It should have been a 2-1 ballgame going into the fifth."

The Yellowjackets' scored first in the top of the second inning on an unearned run. But the Violets' Molly Webber blasted her second home run of the season in the bottom of the frame to knot the score.

"Molly is hitting the ball nicely," James added. "We just have to put all of our hits together. We're not doing that right now."

Rochester followed its fourth-inning explosion with a four-spot in the fifth.

Block added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to account for the final tally.

NOTABLES:

- Kahala Bonsignore also had a hit for NYU, doubling and scoring in the fifth. She also struck out a batter and allowed one run in 2/3 innings of relief.

The Violets get right back into action today when they face #23-ranked Washington University-St. Louis. First pitch has been moved up to 12:45 pm.
