Ray Lumpp, a member of the New York University Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1974, has passed away at the age of 91.
Raymond George Lumpp, NYU class of 1948, was born on July 11, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, and grew up in Queens, NY. He came to NYU after spending three years in the United States Army.
In 1948, he helped lead the Violets to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) finals and was named to the New York Metropolitan area's All-Star Team.
Lumpp, who died on Friday in Mineola, NY, also played for the Knicks in the early 1950's and was the Athletic Director of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) for nearly half a century.
After his success as a Violet, Lumpp went on to win a gold medal as a member of the United States men's basketball team at the 1948 Olympics in London.
"The greatest thrill in my life was when I was selected for the team," Lumpp told The Associated Press when he returned to London for the 2012 Olympics.
Lumpp is survived by his sons William and John; his daughters Joanne Imundo and Mary O'Hara; his brother, Wilbur; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His wife, Anne, died in 2001.
