The New York University men's tennis team lost 9-0 to Emory University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Thursday, April 24. The championship is being held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL, from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26.
The #25-ranked Violets (7-2) had a tough first-round matchup against #4 Emory (16-5).
The Violets, seeded #7 in the eight-team tournament, went down 0-3 after doubles play despite a couple of competitive matchups. In #2 doubles, the Violets went up by a score of 5-2, before falling 8-5.
In singles, senior captain
Steven Wu was up a set and a break against the Atlantic South Region's top-ranked player, Alex Ruderman of the #2-seeded Eagles, when Wu started to cramp. The Hillsborough, NJ, native, could not recover and lost the match in the third set. Wu is currently ranked #25 in the nation and #2 in the Northeast Region.
Sophomore
Aaron Meltzer also performed well in his match at second singles. Meltzer, ranked #22 in the Northeast, took the match against Eric Halpern (#4 in the Atlantic South) deep into the third set before falling 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
"The match was a lot closer than the score indicated, but Emory played a little bit tighter and didn't give up any free points," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "
Steven Wu had his chances and went up a break in the second, but then he started to cramp.
Aaron Meltzer also played well, taking his match to a super set."
