The New York University men's tennis team continued its strong run, beating city rival Baruch College by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday, April 10, in Flushing, NY.
With the victory, the Violets are now 5-4 on the season, with wins in four of their last five matches.
Despite NYU prevailing, it was Baruch who got off to the faster start. In doubles action,
Ting Yee Lai teamed with
William Smithline in the first slot, pulling out an impressive 9-8(2) victory. However, at #2 doubles the team of
Daniel Kil and
Steven Wu lost 8-6, while
CJ Leong and
Bowen Xu lost 9-7 at #3.
In singles, though, the Violets stepped it up, with #2 Steven Wu, #5
Tim Wu and #6 Lai winning in straight sets.
Connor Witty, who has been in impressive form all year, guaranteed the Violets win with a three-set victory at #1, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
James Dean and Leong did not complete their matches. Dean at #4 was leading 6-1, 2-6, 4-2 and Leong at #3 was trailing 4-6, 6-4, 1-4 when play was stopped.
“We got off to a slow start today,” said NYU head coach
Horace Choy. “We fought hard in doubles, however, we just came up short at #2 and #3. The fact we kept it so close made us feel good going into singles.
“Connor was rock solid in the third set once again, as he has been all year," Choy continued. "If we can keep coming up clutch in big matches, it will help us maintain our good level of play.”
NYU will next compete against Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Friday, April 13.
