The sixth-ranked New York University men's volleyball team won its 10th-straight match by defeating Endicott College in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-15) on Friday, March 2, in Beverly, MA.
The Violets are now 11-2 and remain 6-0 in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC), while the Gulls drop to 8-6 overall and remain 6-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference Conference.
It was a total team effort on Friday, as 15 Violets played in the four-set match. The squad struggled to find consistency throughout the first two sets. With 20 attack errors, three reception errors and four blocking errors it was clear that the Violets were their own worst enemy.
"We did what we had to do which was win the match," said head coach Jose Pina. "It wasn't our best game of the year, but we got out with the win and everyone got to play."
NYU really turned it on in the third set and never looked back. The team took the last two sets with ease and even were able to rest its starters in anticipation for Saturday's tougher competition.
Junior Taylor Fauntleroy led all players with a match-high 19 kills on 40 total attacks. Senior Luke Hamlet wasn't far behind with seven kills on 10 attacks and five total blocks.
Freshman Matthew MacDonald nearly recorded a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs.
Pina described MacDonald's match as a "breakout performance."
As always, setter Connor Mortland put in a solid performance with 49 assists on 91 attempts and zero ball-handling errors.
The Violets' next test is tomorrow, March 3, at the MIT Tri-Meet in Cambridge, MA. The squad is set to face unranked Mount Ida College at 1:00pm and #5-ranked host Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 3:00pm.
