Box Score

The New York University men's basketball team led by five late before being outscored 11-0 in the last two minutes in a 74-68 loss to #24 Washington University on Sunday, February 19, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (19-5, 8-5) needed a victory not only to stay in contention for the University Athletic Association (UAA) title, but also to move into the driver's seat with one game left. Instead, the Bears (18-6, 10-3) clinched the UAA Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

NYU trailed by 11 with 13:47 to play before coming all the way back, led by Kyle Stockmal, who scored 14 points during a huge 24-8 run. Stockmal started the spurt by converting a three-point play, forcing a five-second call on defense and feeding Carl Yaffe for a three-pointer, quickly cutting Washington's lead to five.

Devin Karch threw down a huge dunk with 9:35 left to bring the Violets to within two, 58-56, but Dylan Richter eventually made a steal and went coast-to-coast for a dunk of his own to keep it a two-possession game.

With the Bears' lead back at six, Stockmal took over, draining three unanswered treys to put NYU up 65-62 with 3:46 left. With the lead down to two, Max Wein and Yaffe combined to go 3-4 from the line, giving the Violets a 68-63 advantage with 2:04 to play.

However, NYU would not score again as Washington scored 11 unanswered points to end the game. Reserve player Robert Burnett was the star of the final minute for the Bears, first making a steal on defense and hitting a layup plus the foul at the other end to bring Washington to within one.

After missing the free throw, Burnett grabbed the offensive rebound and the Bears called timeout. Burnett then got another offensive board following a missed three-pointer and again scored a layup and-one. This time he hit the free throw, putting Washington up 70-68 with 49.3 seconds left.

Looking to tie the score for NYU, Wein drove and was rejected by Burnett. Alan Aboona then grabbed the rebound and went to the line with 22.3 seconds to play, where he hit the first to give the Bears a three-point edge. Aboona missed the second, but Burnett once again snatched the offensive rebound.

Following another Washington timeout, Teuscher went to the line with 20.1 ticks on the clock. He missed the first, giving NYU hope to get the ball back down only three. But the freshman sank the second free throw, and Ryan Tana's three-point attempt with 10 seconds left was off the mark. Chris Klimek hit two more insurance free throws with 8.4 seconds left to seal the victory – and the UAA title – for the Bears.

In the first half, the Violets led 16-7 after Stockmal's third three-pointer in the early going. Washington responded with a 13-0 run and eventually went up 36-25 while shooting a scorching 76% from the field in the first 13 minutes.

NYU cut it to three late in the period following a Tana triple and a pair of Yaffe free throws, but Richter sank a trey with 45 seconds left to send Washington into the break up 46-40.

The Violets struggled offensively in the first six minutes of the second half, scoring just four points to fall behind by 11 before their big run. Up five late, though, the squad could not put it away, and Burnett's last-minute heroics won it for the Bears.

Stockmal led all scorers with 23 points, finishing 7-12 from the field and 6-9 from beyond the arc. Tana had 13 points and two steals, while Yaffe and Wein each recorded 11 points and six rebounds.

Richter led Washington with 17 points and four assists. Klimek totaled 12 points and eight boards, while Teuscher also scored 12. Burnett finished with 11 points in just 12 minutes on 5-5 shooting.

Prior to the game, NYU honored its four graduating seniors (pictured below) – Ben Dorman, Jude Dworaczyk, Andy Stein, and Allen Tate (as well as manager Mary Ellen Pesanello) – who were playing their final regular-season home game. All four started the game, with Dworaczyk drawing an early offensive foul.

The Violets return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 25, for their regular-season finale at Brandeis University. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
