NYU vs. Rutgers-Newark Box Score
The #6-ranked New York University men's volleyball team extended its win streak to eight after sweeping the NYU Tri-Meet. The squad defeated Ramapo College 3-1 and Rutgers-Newark University 3-0 on Saturday, February 18, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
In their first match, the Violets (9-2) faced off against #13-ranked Ramapo (7-4). NYU proved to have too much firepower, defeating the Roadrunners in four sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21).
Luke Hamlet led NYU with 12 kills on 15 attacks with just one error. He added an impressive seven total blocks.
Nick Capriccio wasn't far behind, recording 10 kills on 15 attacks with a total of five blocks.
For the Roadrunners, Paul Konopacki led the team with 14 kills on 28 attacks.
After Ramapo dropped its second match of the day against Rutgers-Newark in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-22), the stage was set for the highly anticipated rematch between NYU and Division I Rutgers-Newark (5-6).
NYU was looking to avenge a tough five-set loss to the Scarlet Raiders, suffered on the road in its first match of the season on January 20. NYU won the first two sets (25-22, 25-22) that evening, before dropping the next three (16-25, 21-25, 9-15).
This time around, NYU did not falter. After squeaking out a tight back-and-forth first set 26-24, the Violets overcame a set point in the second set en route to winning it 27-25. NYU took a six-point lead late in the third set, but Rutgers-Newark came back and tied the score at 23-23. It felt as though deja vu may have been kicking in before
George Koch ended the match with an ace, giving the team a 25-23 set victory and a sweep of the match.
The difference for the Violets this time around may have been
Taylor Fauntleroy, who was unable to compete in the season opener. Not only did Fauntleroy start this match, but he also led all players with 13 kills.
Connor Mortland provided stability for NYU, recording a total of 68 assists on 157 sets on the day, with 42 coming against Ramapo and 26 versus Rutgers-Newark.
Marcin Midura also had 13 kills for the Scarlet Raiders.
The Violets hope to avenge their only other loss of the season on Wednesday, February 22, against United Volleyball Conference (UVC) foe Vassar College at home at the Coles Sports Center. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
