Men's Swimming & Diving Begins New Era

Violets Open 2012-13 Season Under New Head Coach

Isaacson will provide senior leadership for NYU.
The New York University men's swimming & diving team opens the 2012-13 season on Saturday, October 20, when it hosts SUNY Cortland at the Palladium Athletic Facility.

The season marks a new era for the Violets, as Trevor Miele takes over as Head Coach. He replaces Bob Sorensen, who retired in the offseason after 32 years at the helm of the program.

Miele has a long history with the Violets, having swam for the team from 1995-99, during which time he was a four-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American. After graduating, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach to Sorensen before serving as the Head Coach of men's and women's swimming & diving at the Stevens Institute of Technology for seven years.

In its final season under Sorensen in '11-12, NYU went 5-4 in dual meets, placed sixth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and finished 51st at the NCAA Division III Championships.

This season's squad features a strong veteran core, led by diver Austen Blease, who had an outstanding freshman season in 2011-12. Blease placed 15th in the one-meter dive at the NCAA Division III Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

Other top returners for NYU are swimmers Dan Isaacson, Cole Talbott, Charlie Wu, and Jerry Crowley. Wu established new school records in the 100 back (51.39) and 200 back (1:53.18) last season.

“The team has a very talented core,” said Miele. “They're working harder than they've ever worked before, and it will definitely pay off. Hopefully, our first meet will show it."

The Violets' season-opening dual meet against Cortland will begin with diving at Palladium, with swimming events set to follow at 1:00 pm.
