The New York University men's volleyball team dropped its second match of the season with a 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-23) loss to #15 ranked Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Wednesday, January 25.

The Violets, ranked #4 in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 15 Division III Poll, fall to 1-2 on the season with all three matches being played on the road.

The 3-0 final does not do the Violets justice, as this was a highly competitive match from start to finish. NYU had more aces and kills than Vassar, but it was their errors that cost them tonight.

The team had a combined 22 attack errors, which was double Vassar's total of 11.

“Volleyball is about finishing points, and tonight we just did not execute,” said NYU head coach Jose Pina

Sophomore setter Connor Mortland played very well, although the team was only able to convert 35 of his 94 passes into points.

Seniors Luke Hamlet and Pat Dodd each posted team highs of 10 kills, while fellow senior Jay Hayes led the Violets with nine digs.

For the Brewers, junior Charles Caldwell tallied 18 of his team's 40 kills en route to Vassar's biggest win of the season.

“Vassar came ready to play for their home opener,” Pina said.  “We may have more weapons and be more physical, but that didn't matter tonight.”

The Violets hope to play better in their home opener against SUNY-Institute of Technology on Saturday, February 4, at the Coles Sports Center.
