The New York University women's fencing team ended competition with a win in three attempts against stellar opponents on Wednesday, February 9, in home matches at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
Vassar College knocked off NYU in round one by a score of 17-10, though the Violets' foil team grabbed six of nine bouts.
The Violets pounced on their next foe, Sacred Heart University, winning 17-10. In sabre, NYU snared eight of nine bouts and dominated in foil as well, 7-2.
Against sixth-ranked Columbia University, NYU's final opponent, the Violets lost again, their second defeat by a tally of 17-10.
As usual, several Violet fencers fared well. In sabre, Lisa Verzino captured five of six bouts, while Jackie Leval finished 7-2.
Competing with the foil squad, captain Amanda Rysling won eight of nine bouts, while Becca Baird-Remba tallied five victories in nine attempts.
The Violets return to action on Feb. 27 at the inaugural National Squad Championships, also at the Coles Sports Center.
