Kelly Loughney and
Cara Bonito each scored 14 points in NYU's 77-49 loss to the University of Chicago on Sunday, February 20, in the Windy City.
The #6-ranked Maroons (21-3, 13-0 UAA) clinched the University Athletic Association Championship with the victory and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Violets (12-12, 6-7) shot only 33.3% (19-57) from the field and were held to their second lowest point total of the season.
After Loughney gave the Violets a 4-3 lead, Chicago scored the next 11 points. After another Loughney jumper pulled NYU to within eight, the Maroons countered with a 10-0 run as their first-half lead climbed to as many as 27 points.
The Chicago advantage rose to 38 points in the second half, 69-31, with 7:38 remaining.
Bonito finished 4-5 from long range for the Violets. Loughney, who shot 7-14 from the field, finished with with a game-high nine rebounds.
Leading the balanced Chicago attack was Joann Torres with 14 points. Meghan Herrick had 13 as the Maroons shot 57.1% (12-21) from three-point range.
NYU concludes the regular season next Saturday, February 26, when it hosts Brandeis University at 2:00 pm at the Coles Sports Center.
The annual Alumni Game precedes the varsity contest at noon.
