Just in its third season as a varsity program at New York University, the women's golf team displayed many positive things to look forward to following perhaps its best season as a squad.
Under the guidance of first-year head coach Todd Kolean and assistant coach Matt Huck, the Violets showed marked improvement throughout the 2009-10 season against very tough competition.
As the most tenured member of the Violets' women's golf team, junior Theresa Apoznanski did her part to lead a young squad throughout the season by posting impressive scores consistently. Her season was highlighted during the fall when she won the Martin/Wallace Invitational in October with a plus-seven mark of 151, defeating a field of 55 golfers. Apoznanski's season-best score of 75 in the first round at the Martin/Wallace Invite was the lowest tally of the season for NYU.
Apoznanski posted three top-five finishes and had a stroke average of 82.6 to set the team's single-season record.
There was also a youth movement on the NYU golf squad as several freshmen made their mark throughout the year. Sarah Utz posted the second-best scoring average (86.0) while placing near the top of the leaderboard several times. Performing in each tournament this year for NYU, she had her best finish at the McDaniel College Spring Invitational by placing third out of 37 golfers.
Utz capped off her rookie campaign by coming in 10th out of 58 golfers at the Williams College Invitational, leading the Violets to a fifth-place finish.
“I'm very proud of the team for shooting two good scores for two days,” Huck said after the competition. “We made a statement for teams for next year that we are here to stay.”
Fellow freshman Jiye Kim experienced a solid spring season with the Violets, putting together back-to-back solid weekends at the Jack Leaman Invitational and at the Williams Invite. Overall, she finished in the top-20 of four tournaments.
Another freshman, Charlotte Abrams, shot a career-low round of 88 in the first round at Williams to leave a glimpse of what can be expected next season.
As a team, the Violets finished among the top five in four tournaments while recording some of the best single rounds in school history. Their best showing came in the Martin Wallace Invitational when they placed third out of nine teams. They also posted two other third-place showings at the St. Lawrence University Fall Invitational and at the McDaniel Invite.
The players were just as diligent off the course, as Abrams, Kim and Utz were all named to NYU's Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee Fall Honor Roll.
