The New York University men's tennis team was topped 9-0 by the top-seeded Washington University Bears at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, April 23, in Pittsburgh, PA.
The eighth-seeded Violets (4-9) went down 3-0 after the Bears (14-3) swept the doubles matches. The junior tandem of Alex Stoler and Matt Gross provided the most resistance to Washington, falling 8-4 at #1 doubles.
In singles competition, the Violets could not close the deficit, dropping all six matches. At #6 singles, Gross was defeated 6-4, 6-2 in the most competitive match in singles play.
"We got off to a slow start in doubles, and then in singles Washington really stepped up their game," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "They're #1 in the UAA and top five in the country for a reason."
Washington, ranked #2 in the latest ITA Men's Tennis Division III National Poll, advances to play #5 Brandeis University, which upset #4 University of Chicago. NYU will return to action tomorrow at 9:00 am to face Chicago, the #15 team in the country, in the consolation bracket.
