The eight-seeded New York University men's tennis team will face #1 Washington University in the first round of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. The match is slated to begin at 9:00am on Friday, April 23.
Despite losing their first five matches of the season, the Violets have climbed to a 4-8 record. Their latest win was the most lopsided of the season, a 9-0 victory over Baruch College at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, NY, last Tuesday.
At last year's UAA Championship, Washington topped Emory University 5-4 to claim its first conference title in school history. The Bears (13-3) are currently ranked #2 in the ITA Tennis Men's Division III National Poll, and are favorites to repeat at the UAA's.
Following last Tuesday's win, NYU head coach Horace Choy spoke highly of the UAA competition.
"We've played a couple of UAA teams already, so we know what to expect," Choy said. "With that being said, the UAA is strong from top to bottom so everyone has a shot. I would even argue that the conference is the deepest in the nation."
The winner of the NYU-Washington match will advance to play the winner of the #4 University of Chicago vs. #5 Brandeis University match at 12:30pm on Saturday. The losers of the two matches will face each other in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
