On Tuesday, March 23, the New York University men's volleyball team picked up its fourth win of the season, dropping ranked rival Vassar College in four sets.
The Violets (4-14) won the first two sets, dropped the third, but still triumphed to a 3-1 victory (30-24, 30-24, 27-30, 30-16) over Vassar (15-7), ranked #5 in the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll.
Behind strong serving and offensive execution, NYU was able to overcome the fact that several of its biggest contributors were out due to injury.
"We already have a bunch of our leaders out, which could affect our team morale. But, everyone stepped up today and came ready to play," said NYU head coach Jose Pina.
Freshman Taylor Donovan and junior captain Fran Hodgson combined for nine of 12 service aces to lead the NYU effort. Donovan also notched a team-high eight digs, while Hodgson added 16 kills to go with seven blocks.
Senior captain Mike Ferragonio recorded a team-high 17 kills and sophomore Pat Dodd tallied another 16 for the Violets, who hit a combined .403 for the match.
Senior captain Ori Oren totaled 56 assists for NYU.
"In addition to that confidence, I think the key to the win was our physicality," Pina added. "We played with a level of athleticism that created a match-up in our favor."
Evan Fredericksen posted a game-high 20 kills for Vassar.
The Violets return to action on Saturday, March 27, when the team travels to Cambridge, MA, to take on Harvard University.
