Keith Jensen became the 25th 1,000-point scorer in New York University men's basketball history, but the Violets faltered down the stretch in Saturday's 69-62 loss to University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University at Red Auerbach Arena in Waltham, MA.
From here, the Violets will wait until Monday for word about their postseason plans.
A three-year starter known for his perimeter exploits, Jensen drained a three-pointer with 13:59 remaining to give him 1,001 points and stake NYU (16-9, 7-7 UAA) to a 43-35 lead. He became the first player to surpass the millennium mark since Michael DeCorso did so in 2007. Jensen finished with nine points and four assists in his final regular-season game.
Brandeis (19-6, 9-5 UAA) responded with a rally featuring four treys during an ensuing 14-0 surge, including two three-balls by John Weldon, to claim a 49-43 advantage with 7:33 remaining.
Richie Polan grabbed nine rebounds and scored a team-high 17 points, including a lay-up with 6:48 remaning that snapped a nearly seven-minute scoreless drought to pull the Violets within 49-45. But, NYU never climbed any closer as Brandeis went 14-for-14 from the charity stripe over the final 5:54, including eight conversions in the final 45 seconds.
Terrell Hollins led Brandeis with 18 points and nine rebounds, including four free throws in the final 45 ticks, as the home team went 18-for-20 from the foul line. Andre Roberson (17 points) and Vytas Kriskus (16) rounded out the Judges' trio of double-digit scorers.
Andy Stein tallied 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting for NYU, which shot 49.0% (25-for-51) from the field and went 6-for-17 (35.3%) from three-point range. Omar Meziab scored six points and dished out seven assists while going 3-for-4 at the line as the Violets took just seven free-throw attempts, making six of them.
