Box Score

Freshman Carl Yaffe's career-high 22 points propelled the New York University men's basketball team to a 75-73 University Athletic Association (UAA) victory at Emory University in Atlanta on Friday.

Yaffe shot 8-12 from the field, including 5-7 from three-point range. He scored 16 of his points in the second half as NYU (16-7, 7-5 UAA) erased a 34-33 halftime deficit.

In a game in which neither team led by more than seven points, Andy Stein's lay-up broke a 47-47 tie six minutes into the second half to give NYU the lead for good. Yaffe followed with the next five points to stretch the lead to 54-47 with 13:02 remaining.

Although the Eagles (14-9, 6-6) pulled within two points on several occasions, they never caught the Violets.

Down the stretch, Derek Becker's lay-up with 49 seconds left gave NYU a 70-66 lead. Keith Jensen extended the advantage to six on a pair of free throws with 19 ticks left.

After Emory's Alex Gulotta trimmed the lead to three, 72-69, on a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining, Yaffe hit a clinching free throw and Becker added two more to secure the victory.

Stein finished with 16 points, while Becker added a season-high 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Dan Curtin led Emory with 16 points. Alex Greven scored 12, while Chad Hixon and Austin Claunch also reached double figures (10 points each).

The Violets' weekend road trip continues with another UAA contest at the University of Rochester on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
