The New York University men's basketball team made it six wins in six games this season with its 82-65 victory over The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, December 8, at the Coles Sports Center.

The Violets (6-0) dominated the Lions (1-7) from start to finish and never trailed in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Carl Yaffe, who scored a career-high 24 points, had 20 in the first half. He made seven of 10 shots and went 4-5 from three-point range in the period. Yaffe scored the first bucket of the contest and 13 of the Violets' first 26 points as NYU took a 44-29 lead into intermission.

“Their defense was favoring our weakside players and our guys did a good job of finding Carl,” said NYU head coach Joe Nesci. “He was able to make the shots.”

Andy Stein, who finished with 17 points and shot 7-for-9 from the field, opened the second half with consecutive layups as NYU took a game-high 19-point lead.

With Yaffe held to only two shots and four points in the second half, The College of New Jersey managed to pull within nine points, 62-53, on Jason Chalmers' layup with 8:59 remaining in the game.

However, layups by Stein and D.J. Glavan immediately followed, and NYU never led by less than double digits the rest of the way.

Yaffe also contributed a game-high seven assists while collecting eight rebounds.

Richie Polan just missed his sixth consecutive double-double for the Violets, totaling 16 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Stockmal (10 points) was another double-digit scorer for NYU.

Donovan Smalls led the Lions with 16 points. Kyle Rawson had 15 and Steve Siracusa added 10.

“We're just taking it one game at a time right now,” Nesci said. “It's a tough time for our guys with exams, but they stayed focused and did a great job tonight.”

The Violets return to action this Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host the NYC College of Technology at 1:00 pm at the Coles Sports Center.
